Understanding Your FPL Bill with Solar: Separating Myth from Reality

Many Florida homeowners mistakenly believe that adding solar will eliminate their electric bill entirely. While solar can dramatically reduce your usage charges, it's important to understand the structure of an FPL bill.

The Components of Your Bill

Your FPL bill consists of two primary types of charges:

  1. Usage Charges: Based on how much electricity (kWh) you consume.
  2. Fixed/Base Charges: The daily connection fees that cover infrastructure maintenance, grid access, and customer services.

Why Solar Reduces, But Doesn't Eliminate, Your Bill

Solar panels offset the Usage Charges by producing power during the day. However, even if you are a "net zero" energy producer, you remain connected to the grid to provide power at night or during cloudy periods. FPL charges a base fee to maintain that connection, which remains even when your net usage is zero.

Net Metering: Your Best Asset

Florida's 1:1 net metering ensures that the excess power you produce during the day is credited back to your account.

Billing Scenarios:

  • Producing = Consuming: Usage charges are offset; base bill remains.
  • Producing > Consuming: Excess power is credited against future bills.
  • Consuming > Producing: You are billed for the net power used from the grid.

How to Maximize Solar ROI

To minimize the impact of your remaining base bill:

  • Energy Efficiency: Reduce total consumption. The less power you need, the more your system can push back to the grid for credits.
  • Smart Consumption: Use high-energy appliances (dryer, dishwasher) during peak sunlight hours.
